Name/where are you from and How long have you been playing drums?
Steven Asbury. Born in CA but grew up mostly in NJ, but lived in NYC/Brooklyn for a few years and lived in Seattle for a bit as well. My home is on the road.
I got a snare drum in the 6th grade. My mom thought it was a phase since I always got sick of things pretty quickly. But not this time. I got her to buy me my first used Rogers 5 piece in the 8th grade. But haven't exactly been playing consistently the whole time. I was addicted to skateboarding for a while and for a while that was all that mattered to me. Skating, surfing, and girls and lots of heavy metal. I got really serious about drums sometime in my early 20s when my friend at the time Ben Kenny opened my eyes to drumming. It was deep. I was reborn. I played and heard drums in a whole different way. Hard to explain. Now he plays bass in Incubus and we ain't friends no more haha, but I will always be thankful for what he gave me.
How long have you been touring?
On and off for about 10 yrs
Best part of touring?
Making people happy and dance to music I've poured all my heart, soul, and creativity into. And at the same time being connected to my band on stage so much that it takes on a mind of it's own with the ups and downs and dynamics. It's hard to explain. It's spiritual, magical, and healing. And I guess when you're single the road can be quite fun.
Worst part of touring?
Traffic, smelly bus, smelly band members, smelly self, luggin equipment, missin people at home... but it's all worth it. Touring is everything to me.
How did you get your current gig?
My old band use to open up and tour with The River City Rebels from time to time, and very often they would crash at my house in NJ when they were touring. Long story short they had drummer problems and called me. No audition, no other choices, they knew what I could do, I was already their friend and have been on the road with them, and I was available. Easy as pie.
What are you listening to?
Oh man, it's changes so much. Anything from old hardcore and punk, to R&B, Rap, Rock n Roll (Johnny Thunders to Motley Crue to Buckcherry and everything in between), from Prince to the Bad Brains to Morrissey. Whatever’s good. I like a good hook and smart lyrics and good singers.
What advice would you give to someone starting out doing what you do?
Don't do it!!! It's a pain in the ass and it's almost guaranteed that you will fail and make no money hahaha. Just kidding. Fuck the money and fame. If you believe in your skills and creativity, your band, your message, your songs, then screw everything else. Be real and just go for it full throttle with no safety net. You only live once. Don't settle. Die trying is what I'm about. If it's fun then do it. And don't do it half ass. If it's in your heart then you owe yourself to go for it. No regrets.
Any last words?
Dam I just said a bunch of last words haha. Um, I'm very grateful for all the tours and records that I've been apart of. Most people will never get to do what I’ve done and I've done it plenty. I'm very thankful.
